Students have a few choices for pursuing a foreign language education in Minneapolis. Augsburg College offers degree programs in French, German and Spanish languages, and literature. The University of Minnesota offers a much wider variety of programs including Arabic, bilingual education, Chinese, classical languages, foreign languages, foreign language teacher, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, linguistics, Portuguese, Russian, Scandinavian languages, south Asian Languages, Spanish and teaching English as a second language.

Minneapolis is experiencing steady growth in overall employment. That growth is expected to continue, reaching 15% by the year 2012. The steadily increasing foreign born population will result in more job opportunities for interpreters, translators and educators. Employment rates for interpreters and translators will increase by 20% by the year 2012. Jobs for foreign language and ESL teachers will increase by 7% during the same time period.

Why Minneapolis is a Great Place to Study Language

Minneapolis has a relatively low percentage of non-English speaking residents. Approximately 6% of the population was born outside the United States, and about 9% of households in the city speak a language other than English in the home. Although the total number of foreign-born residents is low, Minneapolis can still be a good city to study for a foreign language degree. Two colleges offer programs in foreign language, with the University of Minnesota offering programs in many different languages. Compared to some other cities, internships aren't too difficult to find, which helps students prepare for a career in foreign languages. Minneapolis remains home to more cultural events and festivals than other Midwestern cities. This allows students to experience cultures while preparing for a foreign language career.
