Photography schools in Minneapolis loom large in reputation. The Minneapolis College of Art and Design, or MCAD, delivers a photography program that imparts traditional training as well as new techniques in silver, digital, and other innovative approaches. Brainco offers a photography program for those with a commercial or editorial career in mind. Meanwhile, for a more traditional B.F.A. type program, there's the University of Minnesota, whose art department sponsors a fine arts degree for those going on to graduate work, or a B.A. in photography for a more hands-on training.
Just because Minneapolis is a mid-sized city does not mean it has limited opportunities. Consider these government job stats: through 2012, photography jobs in general are forecast to increase 3.5%; art and design jobs, 18.6%; art directors, 21.1%; and multimedia jobs, 18.4%. This does not even include freelance or self-employment options.
