Two American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited veterinary technology programs are located within 20 miles of downtown Minneapolis, and each leads to an associate of applied science degree. The veterinary technology program at Argosy University offers special zoo and wildlife courses in addition to the usual small and large animal clinical studies. The veterinary technology program at Globe University promises small class sizes and individual attention during a condensed program of study that allows you to quickly enter the job market. Students planning to become veterinarians can complete their entire veterinary education at the University of Minnesota, beginning with undergraduate work in pre-veterinary studies and ending with a doctoral degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine. If you prefer to earn your undergraduate degree from another institution, a bachelor of science in biochemistry can be obtained from the University of St. Thomas, and biology degrees are awarded by Augsburg College and Metropolitan State University.
The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development projects 10.2% job growth for veterinarians in the Minneapolis metro area from 2002 to 2012. Minneapolis veterinary technologists and technicians can expect 27.5% growth during that period. And 11% job growth is predicted for veterinary assistants and lab animal caretakers.
